Indicator on SODIS use

Matthias Saladin - Wednesday 31 January 2007

Dear all,

I understand the desire of USAID - and probably other donors as well - to use a few simple indicators for measuring behaviour. Thus, I would like to make a comment regarding the proposed indicators:

- As pointed out in other contributions by myself and others, I have doubts about the usefullness and practicability of measuring number litres of treated water. It may be easier to try to find out if the family treats all/part/none of the water used for drinking (cold, because if it's boiled, it is disinfected as well, a point which has been neglected so far).

- In the part of measuring "effective water household water managemen" - which seems like a good indicator to me - I would like to point out that SODIS users typically not expose water bottles every day. It may be a better idea to ckeck if the family has water in bottles ready for consumption - which supposedly is treated. People who practice SODIS regularly usually try to put as many bottles as possible for 1-2 days, depending on weather conditions, and they consume it over the next 1-3 days.

Best regards,
Matthias
