Catholic Relief Services

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is one of HIP's Capacity Strengthening partners from the PVO/NGO partnership.

CRS is one of the world’s largest private voluntary organizations, supporting international relief and development work in more than 90 countries and territories around the world, with offices in 56 countries. CRS’ staff of over 4,000 includes 300 employees in its worldwide headquarters in Baltimore, MD and over 3,800 employees overseas, 91% of whom are national staff from the countries where CRS operates. In FY2004, CRS’ total operating expenses were $573,495,000.

For nearly fifty years, CRS has supported the improvement of community water supply and sanitation systems in some of the most marginalized communities in the world. Water supply, sanitation and hygiene programming constitute a growing component in CRS country programs. This work is supported by a water and sanitation senior technical advisor based at CRS headquarters in Baltimore, regional technical advisors for agriculture, health and water, as well as technical experts and teams in CRS country programs and partner offices in all regions.

CRS currently is in the process of developing water and sanitation strategies at the regional level. For the East Africa region, for example, the following strategic objectives are used to guide the implementation of programs and projects:

§ Promote community participation and empowerment;

§ Promote health-related behavioral change;

§ Promote multiple water use and environmental protection;

§ Establish appropriate sanitation facilities; and

§ Establish sustainable water systems.
