PSI - Population Services International

PSI Point-of-Use Water Program

PSI is a social marketing and behavior change nonprofit organization working in over 70 countries to improve the health and well-being of low-income people. Since 1998, PSI has collaborated with the CDC to formulate, distribute and market safe water solution. PSI is currently managing 14 SWS social marketing programs. Each country program benefits from the experience of those which came before, as well as economies resulting from regional branding materials. (Regional SWS brands include SafeWat, Clorin, Sur’Eau, and WaterGuard). To date, PSI has provided over 14 million bottles of SWS, treating over 20 billion liters of water for families around the world.

PSI supports its SWS social marketing programs with behavior change communications to improve hygiene and sanitation practices, including hand washing and safe water storage in the household. In 2004, PSI expanded its safe water portfolio to include the social marketing of PuR in Uganda and Haiti, and is currently expanding into Pakistan and the Dominican Republic. PuR, developed by Procter and Gamble, is a robust point-of-use technology that combines disinfection with flocculation to remove parasites and heavy metals from water.
