HIP partnered with Management Sciences for Health (MSH) to support the USAID-funded Healthy Communities and Municipalities Project, which helps families in Peru’s Amazonian regions to incorporate preventative health practices into their daily lives. HIP worked with MSH to develop simple, low-cost interventions to help improve the quality of household drinking water. This required developing simple point-of-use household water treatment options using inexpensive, locally available equipment and consumables in the absence of commercial water treatment products. This activity ended in 2008. HIP alos supporting Peru’s Alternative Pro-poor Sanitation Solutions in Peru Initiative coordinated by the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program, providing expertise in monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, formative research, and technology options, with a focus on “sanitation as a business.” In addition, HIP has provided technical support for Peru’s Public Private Partnership for Hand Washing.

The resources on these pages were developed by HIP and its partner, Management Sciences for Health (MSH), for the USAID/Peru Health Municipalities and Communities project training-of-trainers workshop in late 2007. The training materials, outreach worker reference guide, and user reminder materials were developed to encourage families to treat their water before consuming it, wash hands with soap, and dispose properly of feces.
